Learn German with the song Junge (Boy) by Die Ärzte (The Doctors), a German punk rock band from Berlin. In 2007, Junge was #1 on the German charts and also had huge success in Austria and Switzerland.

As band members Farin Urlaub and Bela B. noticed the folder with the umlaut "Ä" was empty in most German record stores, they decided to call the Band they founded with Rodigo González in 1982 “Die Ärzte”. Soon, they became one of Germany’s best known rock bands.

The lyrics of Junge consist of authentic, everyday German and thus offer perfect language learning material. We decoded and translated the lyrics for you. Enjoy great music while you learn useful German. At the bottom of the site, you’ll find pdfs to print. Junge, warum hast du nichts gelernt?
Boy, why have you nothing learnt?

Guck dir den Dieter an!
#Watch to-you the Dieter on#!

Der hat sogar ein Auto.
☞He has even a Car.

Warum gehst du nicht
Why go you not

zu Onkel Werner in die Werkstatt?
to Uncle Werner in the Workshop?

Der gibt dir 'ne
☞He gives you a

Festanstellung,
Permanent-employment,

wenn du ihn darum bittest.
when you him there-around (=for-it) ask.

Junge…
Boy…

Und wie du wieder aussiehst:
And how you again look:

Löcher in der Hose!
Holes in the Trousers!

Und ständig dieser Lärm!
And constantly this Noise/Racket!

Was soll‘n die Nachbarn sagen?
What shall the Neighbours say?

Und dann noch deine Haare!
And then ~on-top-of-that~ your Hairs!

Da fehlen mir die Worte
There lack to-me the Words.

Musst du die denn färben?
Must you ☞them then dye?

Was soll‘n die Nachbarn sagen?
What shall the Neighbours say?

Nie kommst du nach Hause,
Never come you to Home,

wir wissen nicht mehr weiter.
we know not more further.

Junge,
Boy,

brich deiner Mutter nicht das Herz.
break to-your Mother not the Heart.

Es ist noch nicht zu spät,
It is still not too late,

dich an der Uni einzuschreiben
you on the Uni to-enrol.

Du hast dich doch früher
You have you though earlier

so für Tiere interessiert,
so for Animals interested,

wäre das nichts für dich,
wouldn’t-be that nothing for you,

eine eigene Praxis?
an own Practice?

Junge...
Boy…

Und wie du wieder aussiehst,
And how you again look,

Löcher in der Nase
Holes in the Nose

und ständig dieser Lärm
and constantly this Noise/Racket.

Was soll'n die Nachbarn sagen?
What shall the Neighbours say?

Elektrische Gitarren
Electric Guitars

und immer diese Texte.
and always these Texts.

Das will doch keiner hör'n
That wants though nobody hear.

Was soll‘n die Nachbarn sagen?
What shall the Neighbours say?

Nie kommst du nach Hause,
Never come you to Home,

so viel schlechter Umgang.
so much bad Company.

Wir werden dich enterben.
We will you disinherit.

Was soll das Finanzamt sagen?
What shall the Tax-office say?

Wo soll das alles enden?
Where shall that all end?

Wir machen uns doch Sorgen.
We make to-us though Worries.

Und du warst so(lch) ein süßes Kind.
And you were such a sweet Child.

Und du warst so(lch) ein süßes Kind.
And you were such a sweet Child.

Du warst so süß.
You were so sweet.

Und immer deine Freunde,
And always your Friends,

ihr nehmt doch alle Drogen!
you take though all Drugs!

Und ständig dieser Lärm.
And constantly this Noise/Racket.

Was soll‘n die Nachbarn sagen?
What shall the Neighbours say?

Denk an deine Zukunft, denk an deine Eltern.
Think on (=of) your Future, think on your Parents.

Willst du, dass wir sterben?
Want you that we die?

Lad, why haven't you learnt anything?
Look at Dieter!
He’s even got a car.
Why don’t you go
to uncle Werner in the garage/workshop?
He'll give you a permanent job,
if you ask him for it.
Lad…

And look at you:
holes in your trousers!
And constantly this racket!
What will the neighbours say?
And then your hair!
Words fail me there.
Do you have to dye it?
What will the neighbors say?
You never come home,
we don't know what to do.

Lad,
don't break your mother's heart.
It's not too late yet,
to enrol at uni
You used to be
interested in animals a lot,
wouldn’t that be something for you?
your own practice?
Lad…

And look at you:
holes in your trousers!
And constantly this racket!
What will the neighbours say?
Electric guitars,
and always these lyrics.
Nobody wants to hear that.
What will the neighbours say?
You never come home,
so much bad company.
We'll disinherit you.
What will the tax office say?
Where's this all heading?
We're so worried.

And you were such a sweet child.
And you were such a sweet child.
You were so sweet.

And always your friends,
you all take drugs anyway.
And constantly this racket.
What will the neighbours say?
Think of your future, think of your parents.
Do you want us to die?
